Echinocactus texensis
Supplied in a 6cm pot
Echinocactus texensis is a low growing, blueish- green, barrel cactus, up to 15cm wide, commonly known as ‘The Horse Crippler’ for obvious reasons. Native to the arid regions of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and northern Mexico. This cactus is well-adapted to the extreme heat and dryness of the desert, growing in areas where water is scarce and temperatures can soar. It has also proven to be extremely hardy here in the UK if kept dry over the winter months, making it a great addition to UK xeric gardeners.
This cactus in cultivation is relatively easy. Use a very free draining cactus compost in terracotta pots with large drainage holes. Keep in a bright sunny position outside and feed in the summer months. Bring in under glass and keep dry from November to May. We have experimented with this cactus outside in raised beds and have found it to perform well, but it does require a rain cover over the wet winter months. Flowering happens in spring, with pink to pale silvery rose coloured flowers of up to 6cm in diameter that emerge from the centre.
